My favorite store
My favorite store is not, as some might think, whole foods, though i do enjoy going there sometimes (not all the time). I do enjoy shopping there for other people, and paying for the food with their money, and being able to prepare food for them, and to get paid for it. But when it comes to my household and shopping for it, give me a good, clean, well-run supermercado any day. There are supermercados and there are supermercados - but the mother of all supermercados is Edgewater Produce in Andersonville in Chicago. It’s an honest to goodness real and wonderful produce market with a nice butchershop attached. The people who work there, even if they don’t want to be there, act like they do and are really helpful if you have any questions. The food is beautifully presented and always very high quality. I got a nice big bottle of extra virgin olive oil for 5.99 - and it’s good stuff. They rotate in really nice new products, and still keep a selection of the things I am used to finding there. They carry greek yogurt, and they have prepacked nuts, yogurt pretzels, and other things on one entire wall. They sell carnitas and deli items. I spent about forty five dollars there today and I’m stocked up for a while.
I’m listening to Overkill by Men At Work and thinking about what I am going to make for a sample dinner for my prospective new family that I want to cook for. They sound like truly lovely people, they really do. I want this to work out and last a long time - not only for the financial aspect, but for the stability and relationship building. Being a family cook has always and long been a dream of mine, and the possibility that it could very well come true really excites me. I’m already teaching - and that’s a miracle.
So here I’m going to figure out a shopping list of the things I want to make for them.
mixed greens & baby spinach, one head of frisee or radicchio. zested orange and lemon dressing with juice of both and olive oil. almonds.
acorn squash soup with sauteed red onion and spinach oil
broccoli or green beans with slivered garlic & olive oil
dill basmati
black cod with miso glaze
pear and berry crisp with honeyed McCann’s irish oats
